Whilst I have been mostly too busy for much music lately, I did manage to make busy-ness and music fit a few months ago by putting together some music for the project I've been busy with.
The Earthworker Cooperative has been running a "Give Tanks' crowdfund campaign to install locally-manufactured solar hot water systems into low-income housing -
www.chuffed.org/project/givetanks. In helping with produce the crowdfund video, I thought I'd put some music together.
So, over the course of a few hours over a weekend with my dodgy old laptop and a zoom recorder, I gathered guitars, wheeled a kick drum (rubbish bin) into the loungeroom and took a hammer to my kitchen table (good snare sound) and to the steel trailer in the backyard. Here's what happened...
The music is made to sync-up with the video content (watch at
www.chuffed.org/project/givetanks), and the final video cut ALMOST does.
I thought I'd sneak in some subtle (not so subtle) nods to church bells ringing (in line with the holiday season and gift giving theme of the campaign); a semi-apocalyptic minor-key break-down during discussion of the challenges the project is addressing; and some steel hammers clunking to the beat of the worker-owned factory making stainless steel solar hot water tanks. There's also a very silly grunge/funk break-out in the middle - not featured in the video because it's a little too silly.
The experience proved to be lots of fun, and a great (to-be-used-again) excuse to spend a solid few hours making music and banging on things
